Genealogy Vernon Twp. in Wartime Vernon Twp. Civil War

Grand Army of the Republic
G.A.R.

What was the G.A.R.?
The G.A.R. was an organization that brought together veterans of the Civil War.  Once the pain of the war was over, veterans wanted to relive the comradeship between themselves and their fellow soldiers.

When was the G.A.R. started?
The G.A.R. was begun on April 6, 1866, in Decatur, Illinois, by 2 tent-mates from the 14th Illinois Infantry.

Could any Civil War veteran join?
No, the G.A.R. was limited to veterans with an honorable discharge of the Union Army, Navy, Marine Corps, or the Revenue Cutter Service who had served at some point between April 12, 1861 and April 9, 1865.  It was stated as: “Membership limited strictly to veterans of the late unpleasantness”.

What is a G.A.R. Post and how did they come up with Post names?
A G.A.R. Post was where the local Civil War veterans of a community came together.  There were six Posts in Hancock County alone.  The Posts were usually named after an honored person from that area who died during the Civil War or shortly after.

What were the Posts in Hancock County and how long did they last?
1) Charlottesville Post #545 – 1889-1898
2) Fortville, Sol D. Kempton Post #228 – 1883-1930
3) William E. Hart Post #454 – 1886-unknown
4) Greenfield, Samuel H. Dunbar Post – 1882-1936
5) New Palestine, Charles A. Kirkhoff Post #534 – 1888-1907
6) Willow Branch, Lorenzo Fort Post #438 – 1886-1893

Who were the veterans in the Fortville Post?
The following is a list of members of the Sol D. Kempton Post #228 in Fortville with their rank in the Civil War, when they passed, their age when they passed, and the G.A.R. journal that recorded their passing.
